Welcome to Professor Ady's Hyperwinch House . . . .

Description of the Hyperwinch Project

HYPERWINCH, a "house" of content appropriate to English Studies, is modeled on Sarah Winchester's sprawling mansion in San Jose, California. Built in the late 19th century, this estate was always under construction. In fact, Sarah reportedly had been told by a spiritual medium back in Boston that should the construction ever cease, the millionairess heir to the Winchester rifle company would suffer a deadly end by all the ghostly victims of her company's firearms.

And so, it was said that throughout her years at the house a carpenter's hammer or saw was always heard. The house grew, extending like a spider's web, and was remodeled continually.

Our "hyperwinch house" similarly must create many rooms: a "room" for Poe or Shakespeare, for Joyce's Ulysses , for media analysis, for model student essays or for any other subject related to English studies. It should be informative and playful. It should use images, text, sound, hyperlinks to other rooms of information, links to interesting websites worldwide.

Both students and faculty will build, tear down, and rebuild this estate as an ongoing, continually transforming body of information.
