Course Description:
This intensive course will provide well-motivated students with
an opportunity to accelerate their progress in the Spanish language.
In one semester it will cover the equivalent of SPA 104 and SPA
120 (fourth and fifth semesters of college language study). Instruction
time will be double that of regular language courses: six hours
per week. Students will also meet for an additional hour with
our visiting teaching assistant from Latin America.
The class structure is designed to give students the opportunity
to use Spanish as a means of communication. The class places
equal emphasis on all five basic skills: reading, writing, listening,
speaking, and learning about Hispanic cultures. It offers a comprehensive
review of skills in dynamic and interactive exercises that strengthen
each student's command of grammar and vocabulary. The course
also enhances students' reading and writing skills as we explore
a select number of literary texts from the Hispanic tradition.
The class is conducted entirely in Spanish. Students are expected
to prepare the vocabulary and grammar for each lesson outside
of the classroom. Our valuable class time will be devoted to
putting the lessons and materials into practice. In addition,
each student should have access to email and the internet, since
we will use these modes of communication throughout the course.

Please Note: The class
is conducted entirely in Spanish. Students are expected to prepare
the reading and assignments prior to class. Daily participation,
preparation and attendance are required for success in this intensive
course. For that reason, more than three (3) undocumented absences
will result in a significant grade reduction. Failure to document
absences after the third absence will result in a one point reduction
of the final course grade for each additional missing day. If
classes are missed, it is the student's responsibility to turn
in any work due, get the assignments, and complete the reading
materials for the next class. There are no make-ups for quizzes
and tests, unless the absence is authorized by the Dean's office.
Late assignments will not be accepted either.
Students are encouraged to discuss any concerns about the course
with the instructor. In addition, tutors can offer additional
help at the Academic Support Center.
