Text: Maitland Jones, Organic Chemistry, 2nd ed. 2000. Optional Supplement: Jones & Gingrich, Organic Chemistry Study Guide/Solution Manual.

Course Outline:

Chapter 1, 2, 3: Lewis structures, covalent bonds, orbital hybridization and shapes of molecules, constitutional isomers, structural formulas. Single and multiple bonds, (Ch12:) benzene, resonance, geometric isomers. Functional groups. (ChX:) Acids & bases, curved arrow symbolism, structure-activity relationships, isotopically labelled compounds.

Chapter 2, 4, 5: Saturated hydrocarbons, nomenclature, conformational analysis of ethane, butane, and cycloalkanes. Constitutional isomers vs. stereoisomers, symmetry, chiral molecules, enantiomers & diastereomers, absolute and relative configurations, projection formulas. (Ch 14:) NMR, IR spectroscopies

Chapter 6: Alkyl halides, nucleophilic substitution reactions, mechanisms of reactions, transition state theory, the SN2 mechanism. The SN1 mechanism, carbocations, factors that affect the mechanisms, syntheses by SN reactions. Elimination reactions.

Chapter 3, 8: Unsaturated hydrocarbons, nomenclature, hydrogenation and relative stabilities, index of hydrogen deficiency, synthesis of double and triple bonds, acidity of alkynes.

Chapter 8,9: Reactions of alkenes and alkynes, electrophilic addition, Markovnikov's rule, cleavage reactions, addition polymers.

Chapter 16: Alcohols and ethers, nomenclature, synthesis from alkenes, O-H bond cleavage reactions, C-O bond cleavage reactions, chemistry of ethers.

Exams: There will be three; 20Sept, 18Oct, and 15Nov. There will also be a cumulative Final Exam during Finals Week. You see it here, don’t expect something different come Finals Week.

Quizzes: Every Friday except hour exam days.

(Least high quiz grade will be dropped) 20%

Hour Exams: Dates given above. 35%

Laboratory: Every week. 25%

Final Exam: Comprehensive, during Finals Week 20%

The following schedule for grades will be followed: A (93-100%), A- (90-92), B+ (87-89), B (83-86), B- (80-82), C+ (77-79), C (73-76), C- (70-72), D+ (67-69), D (60-66), F (59% and lower)

ATTENDANCE: Mandatory for all class and laboratory sessions. The penalty is that you’ll not get all of what you’re paying for or the "benefit of the doubt." If you have to miss an exam, see me before the exam to make alternate arrangements.
