First Year Program

The First Year Program (FYP) is an invitational program providing academic enrichment and support for the 54 students accepted into the program. Students invited into the program share some common factors that lead them to enroll in a program offering a supportive network for the transition to college academics. They enjoy smaller classes, close connections with faculty, and shared social and cultural events.

The FYP consists of a year-long series of six courses in History, Philosophy and English Composition and Literature. Meeting General Education requirements, the classes are small (18 per class) and are taught by professors who also serve as academic advisors for students in the program. A Teaching and Tutorial Assistant (TTA) is assigned to each course. These TTAs, trained in the Academic Support Center, work with course content as well as writing skills.

The outcomes of the FYP indicate its success for the students who elect to enroll, including: solid academic performance, integration into campus life, and involvement and participation in a small community within the larger campus life of Assumption College.
