Assumption Donates $40,000 to City Park Project
May, 2003--Assumption College President Thomas R. Plough, area residents, and the City gathered yesterday at a press conference at Fairmount Square Park, located on Hemans Street, for the announcement of a “centennial” partnership forged to revitalize this neighborhood park facility.

WISE Program Receives Yarock Award

May, 2003--The Worcester Institute for Senior Education (W.I.S.E) Program at Assumption College recently received the Seventh Annual Irving J. Yarock Award.

Castagna to Retire as Athletic Director
April, 2003 --- Rita Castagna, Director of Athletics at Assumption College since 1986, will retire effective August 31, 2003. The announcement ends three decades of dedicated service to the College and its athletes.

Assumption College Throws a Baby Shower

March, 2003—The Reach-Out Center at Assumption College, along with three Resident Assistants who work at the school, has completed a charity project

Carolyn and Peter Lynch to Speak at Commencement
March, 2003 —While it is rare for a college to ask two individuals to share the podium to deliver a commencement address, Assumption College is deeply honored that Carolyn and Peter Lynch of Marblehead, MA, have accepted an invitation from the students and Trustees of the College to speak at the 2003 Commencement on Saturday, May 24, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. This will be the first formal event of the College’s 19-month Centennial Year celebration.

Update to the Assumption Community on the War in Iraq

Assumption College discusses the “Morality of War”

March, 2003
On Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at 4:00 in the Auditorium of La Maison, Assumption College will be hosting a panel presentation on "The Morality of War with Iraq" as part of the Bishop Reilly and the Diocese of Worcester Peace Education Initiative.


Dan Duquette will lecture on the Business Side of Sports
March, 2003--Assumption College Graduate School will host the second annual Assumption College Business Lecture titled, “The Business Side of Sports-Professional Athletes/Professional Salaries” with guest lecturer, former Boston Red Sox General Manager Dan Duquette on Tuesday April 1, 2003 at 5:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of La Maison Francaise.

Human Resource Professionals Career Development Panel

March, 2003--The Center for Continuing & Professional Education at Assumption College, in cooperation with the Human Resources Management Association of Central Massachusetts will be holding a special panel presentation on Career Development for Human Resource Professionals on Thursday, March 20, 2003 at 6:00 pm in the Salon of La Maison Francaise.

Assumption College to Hold Movie/Discussion on Carmen Amaya

March, 2003 —Assumption College is pleased to announce a showing of the critically acclaimed film, “Queen of the Gypsies: A Portrait of Carmen Amaya,” on Thursday, March 13, at 7:00 pm in the Auditorium of La Maison Francaise. Member of Bush's Council on Bioethics To Speak at Assumption
March, 2003 —Assumption College is proud to present a lecture by Dr. Gilbert Meilaender, a member of President Bush’s council on Bioethics. The lecture, called “Keeping the BIOS in Bioethics,” will take place on Thursday, March 13, 2003 at 7:00 pm in the Salon of La Maison Francaise.

Assumption College Graduate Rehabilitation Counseling Program Open House

February, 2003—The Graduate Rehabilitation Counseling Program at Assumption College will hold an open house on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 at 4:30 pm in the Switzer Building Conference Room.


Assumption College Continuing Education Program to Hold Computer Workshops

Assumption Receives Federal Support for New Science Center

February, 2003—Assumption College recently received word that it has been approved for $235,000 in congressionally-authorized grants to support the new $18 million Science Center.


Lobster Research at Assumption College Garners Grant:
Aggression and Dominance in lobsters will be studied

February, 2003—Assumption College professor Dr. Stuart Cromarty, whose research includes, working with the American Lobster, has recently been awarded a $250,000 National Science Foundation grant through a joint proposal submitted with Dr. Gabriele Kass-Simon from the University of Rhode Island.

Assumption College and the Beck Institute for Cognitive Studies to Sponsor Workshop on Teaching Parenting Skills

January, 2003--Assumption College and the Aaron T. Beck Institute for Cognitive studies will be sponsoring a workshop called “Teaching Parenting Skills” on Tuesday, February 7, 2003 at 12:30 p.m. in the Salon of La Maison Francaise with Dr. Paul M. Rosen.

Assumption College to Host Three-Day Teach-In on Peace and War

January, 2003--- The Sociology and Anthropology department will be hosting a three-day teach-in entitled “Waging Peace: Perspectives on Peace and War,” from February 10-12, 2003. Below is the schedule for each day.

January 29, 2003—On Friday, January 31, 2003, Assumption College will welcome participants in the 6th annual African American Festival for an evening of native foods and music.

Local Schools Receive Money from Assumption College

December, 2002—On Thursday, December 19, Assumption College’s University Transportation Center (UTC) will announce the recipients for the fourth and final round of grant awards.

Assumption College Students Perform with Kenny Rogers
December, 2002 —Thirty (30) Assumption students from the Chapel Choir and Chorale have been invited to join country music legend Kenny Rogers on stage during his upcoming Christmas Concert at the Providence Performing Arts Center in Providence, RI. The concert is scheduled for Thursday, December 19, 2002 at 7:30 p.m.

Assumption College Band Christmas Concert
November, 2002—The Assumption College Band will perform its annual Christmas Concert on Friday, December 6, 2002 in the Hagan Center Hall on the campus of Assumption College, 500 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA. The Concert will begin at 8:00 p.m. and is free to the public.

Assumption College Awarded Diversity Grant
November, 2002—Assumption College received the first installment of a $200,000 grant from Fleet National Bank Trustee of the Lloyd G. Balfour Foundation to support the College’s ongoing efforts to attract and retain students of color. The award was presented at a ceremony this week with representatives from Fleet National Bank and the College.

Nationally Syndicated Columnist Comes To Assumption College
November, 2002-- Assumption College Student Government Association will present a lecture called “College in the Nude,” by award winning columnist Harlan Cohen on Monday, November 18, 2002 at 6:30 p.m. in Hagan Campus Center Hall.

Assumption College Hosts Iraq Lecture
October, 2002—Assumption College will host a talk called “The United States and Iraq” with guest lecturer George M. Lane on Wednesday October 30, 2002 at 4:00 pm in the Auditorium of La Maison Francaise.

Assumption College Announces Capital Campaign
October, 2002—
Assumption College announced the most ambitious fundraising effort in its 100-year history tonight during a special black-tie dinner held at historic Mechanics Hall on October 19, 2002. The cornerstone project of the $30 million Centennial Campaign will be a new 63,000 sq. ft. science center, which is currently under construction.

McGovern stops at Assumption on Local College Tour

October, 2002—Congressman James P. McGovern (D-Worcester) will be visiting Assumption College tonight, Tuesday October 29, 2002 at 8:30 p.m. as part of his local campus political tour. He will be in the Hagan Campus Center Hall.

Assumption College Announces Forum on Church Crisis

September, 2002
—Assumption College is pleased to announce a two-part forum called “The Crisis in the Church” on September 17th and 18th. Both events are free and open to the public.
The forum begins with a lecture called “The Nature of the Priesthood Today,” by
Fr. Dennis Gallagher, A.A’69, on Tuesday, September 17, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hagan Campus Center.

Salisbury Street Sampler Launches Web site
Annual Event to Attract Hundreds

September, 2002–On Saturday, September 21, 2002, thirteen institutions will open their doors to the public for an afternoon of free entertainment, refreshments, and tours. Known as the Salisbury Street Sampler, this annual event began six years ago as a way to attract the public to view the many beautiful and world-renown institutions located along Salisbury Street, which are not always accessible to the public.

Judy Shephard to speak at Assumption College
September, 2002
—Assumption College is proud to announce a lecture entitled “The Legacy of Matthew Shephard,” by Judy Shephard on Thursday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the Laska Gymnasium.
Judy Shephard is the mother of Matthew, the homosexual Wyoming college student who was brutally attacked and killed as the result of a hate crime in 1998. Since her son’s death, Judy has traveled to many schools and colleges to speak to young people about hat crimes and creating a safe community for all, regardless of race, sex, religion, or sexual orientation.

Assumption College Creates Lasting Memorial to Victims of September 11, 2001;
Week of Remembrance Planned

September, 2002—Like so many other business and institutions, Assumption College was directly touched by the tragedy of September 11, 2001, with the loss of one of its alums in the World Trade Center attacks. This year, students, administrators, and faculty will remember the first anniversary with a reflective Week of Remembrance and the creation of a Garden of Remembrance, in memory of all the victims of September 11, 2001, especially Thomas V. Linehan ’84.

Assumption College Awards Soule Scholarship
September, 2002—Assumption College has recently awarded the Charles E. Soule Scholarship to Patrick Devine of (7 Los Angeles Street) South Hadley, MA. The privately funded scholarship is the first of its kind available to graduate level, rehabilitation students at Assumption College, and is open to full time students enrolled in the Master of Arts in Rehabilitation Counseling program.

Winslow Myers and Roger Cloutier, Outstanding Faculty Award 2002
August, 2002—Assumption CollegeWinslow Myers and Roger Cloutier, adjunct faculty members for Continuing Education, each received the Outstanding Faculty Award at the Annual Continuing Education Faculty Dinner on August 21, 2002.

Assumption Professors Produce CDs.
August, 2002—There’s an old saying that goes, “Those we can, can. Those who can’t, teach.” Well a couple of Assumption College teachers are proving that old saying to be just plain untrue.

Philosophy professor Paul Gallagher and Music Instructor Frank Corbin have both recently produced full-length CDs, and Corbin’s has been on the shelves at Tower Records in Times Square, NYC for several weeks. Gallagher’s CD is of a more personal nature, but is the product of hours of work right on Assumption’ campus.

Assumption Growth in the Community
There appears to be some misinformation in the community about Assumption College’s plans for the former Brooks property.

When Assumption College was approached by the Brooks family to purchase almost 8 acres abutting the college campus, the Board of Trustees did so without specific plans, but recognized its value and potential use to the College. Revenues derived from our students’ tuition dollars were used to purchase the property. Since acquiring the property, we’ve elected, for now, not to fence the boundaries, post signs or otherwise discourage its use as an open area. We did, however, commence upon a careful analysis concerning the physical plant needs of the Assumption community and the possibility of utilizing this land to meet those needs.…

Schlesinger Named Northeast-10 Female Scholar-Athlete of Year
Second Straight Winner for the Greyhounds
July, 2002—Recent graduate and standout field hockey player Heather Schlesinger has been named the 2002 Northeast-10 Conference Female Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year.

Andy Laska, Joe O'Brien to be inducted in New England Basketball Hall of Fame
Tim Shea '72, Joy Barry '93 included in Inaugural Class
July, 2002, KINGSTON, RI --- The New England Basketball Hall of Fame has announced its Inaugural Class, which will be inducted into the new hall of fame October 4, 2002 at the University of Rhode Island.
Assumption College will be represented by four individuals . . . the most accorded to any Division II institution. Former coach and athletics director ANDY LASKA, former player and coach JOE O'BRIEN '57, alum and present athletics director and coach at Salem State College TIM SHEA '72 and former player JOY BARRY '93, who will be inducted as part of the 1986-87 Nashua High team which finished undefeated.

Assumption College Holds Summer Recreation Camps
June, 2002—Assumption College is hosting a its 7th annual Greyhound Recreation Camp, a series of week-long summer recreation camps for children age 6-14.

Assumption College to Hold "Topping Off" Ceremony
June, 2002—Assumption College will hold a “topping off ceremony” to commemorate the raising of the final construction beam of the College’s new $18 million science and technology center. The red-white-and blue beam will be raised in a ceremony on at Tuesday, July 2, 2002 at the construction site.

Assumption College to Host Reunion Weekend 2002
June, 2002—Assumption College will host their annual Reunion Weekend this coming weekend, June 7-9, 2002. All events are held on the Assumption College campus, 500 Salisbury Street.

Assumption College Grant Funded Projects to be Presented at Union Station

June, 2002—The Second Annual Research Program Conference for Educators, Environmentalists, and Transportation Professionals will be held on Saturday June 8, 2002 at Union Station, Worcester, MA from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

UnumProvident funds Scholarship at Assumption College
First privately funded award for Rehabilitation Counseling graduate students

May, 2002— At its annual meeting this morning at Mechanics Hall, UnumProvident Corporation presented Thomas R. Plough, Ph.D., President of Assumption College, with the first disbursement of the Charles E. Soule Scholarship in Rehabilitation Counseling. Soule retired from Paul Revere Corporation in 1997 as Paul Revere and Provident Companies merged. He began his career in 1956 after graduating from Dartmouth College and served Paul Revere for 41 years, most recently as the company’s seventh President. This scholarship is a tribute to Soule’s many contributions to the disability industry.
