
The Legal and Ethical Issues
of Dying to be Discussed at Assumption College
(Private Lecture)
Worcester, MARev. John J. Paris, S.J., the Michael P. Walsh Professor
of Bioethics, Boston College, will deliver the distinguished Assumption College
Presidents Council Lecture on Wednesday, May 8, 2002 at 6:00 p.m. in Hagan
Campus Center Hall on the campus of the College. The topic of the lecture is
"End of Life Care: Ethical and Legal Issues."
Rev. John Paris, S.J. is an internationally known authority on the medical,
legal, and ethical aspects of health care treatment decisions.
He holds three masters degrees and two doctoral degrees, including a bachelors
and a masters from Boston College, as well as both an M.A. and Ph.D. in
social ethics from the University of Southern California. Fr. Paris served as
a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow on two occasions and as a visiting
scholar at six different Universities, including the Schools of Medicine at
the University of Chicago, Georgetown University and the University of Pennsylvania.
Currently a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at Tufts
Medical School, he has served as consultant to the Presidents Commission
for the Study of Ethics in Medicine, the United States Senate Committee on Aging,
and the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment. He has published more
than 100 articles in the areas of law, medicine, and ethics in publications
such as The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of the American Medical
Association, The Journal of Intensive Care Medicine and The Wall Street Journal.
He is the Ethics Section Editor of The Journal of Perinatology.
A professor at College of the Holy Cross for 21 years prior to his appointment
at Boston College in 1991, Fr. Paris has appeared on television news programs
such as 20/20, 60 Minutes and Good Morning America, and has been interviewed
by both Connie Chung and Tom Brokaw.

Fr. Paris has served as a consultant and expert witness in many of the landmark
biomedical cases including Karen Ann Quinlan, Paul Brophy, Baby Jane Doe, Jobes,
Baby K and Gilgunn. He lectures throughout the country to bar associations,
judicial conferences, medical societies and hospital administrators.
The President Council Distinguished Lecture Series is for members of the Assumption
College President's Council and other invited guests.
