Assumption College Announces November Events
November, 2002Assumption College is pleased to present the following events
throughout the month of November. All events will be held on the college campus
and are free and open to the public. For more information on any of the following

November 4The Worcester Institute for Senior Education presents a concert
featuring soprano Jane Shivick and college organist Frank Corbin at 4:00 P.M.
in the Salon of La Maison Franciase.
November 6The HUMANARTS series debuts a new Jazz at Charlies series
with Tomo Fujita and his band, Blue Funk, at 5 pm in Charlies Café,
located in the Hagan Campus Center. The Jazz at Charlies series is new
this year and this is the debut event. Tomo Fujita is a master musician who
has the ability to inject a deep soulfulness into every note he plays. In addition
to his instrumental mastery, he also understands the key elements of showmanship
and live performance; this animated guitarist, often seen bouncing madly on
the stage in flashy red pants, is as exciting to watch as he is to listen to.
November 7The Spanish Film Series continues with El Hijo de la Novia
(The Son of the Bride) at 7:00 P.M. in the Information Technology Center, room
217. The movie is th story of a boy, Rafael who thinks things should be going
better for him: he spends 24 hours at his restaurant, hes divorced, he
barely sees his daughter, he doesnt have any friends, and hes avoiding
getting serious with his girlfriend. On top of it all, he hasnt visited
his mother, who has Alzheimers and lives in a nursing home, for quite
a while. A series of events leads him to rethink his life, especially his fathers
newest idea to fulfill a long held wish of his mother: to have a church wedding.
November 7The HUMANARTS program presents a lecture by Dr. Medina Lasansky
entitled The Multi-Media Landscape of the Italian Sacri Monti, at
7:30 P.M. in the La Maison Franciase. Dr. Lasansky teaches courses in the history
of architecture and urban development. She is currently researching aesthetic
legislation, the combination of architecture and law.
November 9The HUMANRTS program presents a concert by the New England Spiritual
Ensemble at 8:00 P.M. in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. The New England Spiritual
Ensemble is a group of professional singers devoted to "preserving the
art and tradition of the Negro spirituals." They have performed nationally
on "CBS Sunday Morning" and on
National Public Radio's "Performance Today."November 10Assumption
College is pleased to celebrate the Beatification of three Bulgarian martyrs
with a ceremony at 10:00 A.M. in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.
November 13The Ecumenical Institute presents a lecture entitled Martyrs
and Persecution of the Catholic Church in Our Time, by Dr. Robert Royal
at 7:00 P.M. in the Hagan Campus Center. This lecture is the annual dAlzon
lecture in the Ecumenical Institutes series.
November 15The dAlzon Arts series presents a poetry reading with
Craig Nelson and Professor James Lang at 7:00 P.M. in the dAlzon library.
James Lang is an Assistant Professor of English at Assumption College. He also
writes a column for "The Chronicle of Higher Education." Craig Nelson
was a member of the 1997 Providence and 2001 Boston Cantab Slam teams. He has
featured, workshopped and slammed throughout New England. A native of Rhode
Island, Craig is presently surviving (survival being a relative term) as a poet
in Worcester, MA. His style of poetry might be described as humor with a point.
November 16Sinners and Saints, a concert by the Salisbury
Singers will take place at 7:30 P.M. in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. From
chant to spiritual, hear the Musical Portraits of Saints and Sinners featuring
the works of Benjamin Britten, Daniel Pinkham, Hildegard of Bingen, Palestrina,
Bruckner and AndrÈ Thomas
November 18The Student Government Association will present a lecture called
College in the Nude, by award-winning columnist Harlan Cohen at
6:30 P.M> in Hagan Campus Center Hall. Harlan Cohen is one of the most widely
read and respected columnist among people in their teens and twenties. His nationally
syndicated "Help Me Harlan!" advice column reaches over one million
readers every week in over 70 local daily and college newspapers. Dating, relationships,
sex, no sex, and a dramatic celebration of relationship rejection are exposed
and explored in this interactive and humorous program incorporating invaluable
resources and support services unique to Assumption College.
November 20The dAlzon Arts Series continues with the Student Art
Show, which runs from today through January 17th of 2003 in the dAlzon
Library. The exhibit will have various works from seniors in the Artworks program.
November 21The Spanish Film Series continues with Un paraiso bajo
las estrella (A paradise under the stars) at 7:00 P.M. in the Information Technology
Center, room 217. This is an audience award-winning film from the Havana Film
Festival about a star-struck Sissy, who wants to sing at the Tropicana Club,
but her macho truck driver father forbids it. When he accidentally hits a biker
on the road, he brings the victim home to recuperate. Sissy naturally falls
hard for the hunk, but love-like stardom-does not come easy. There are many
more complications in this buoyantly entertaining comedy/musical.
November 22AC Theatre will present its own version of the award-winning
play and acclaimed HBO movie "The Laramie Project", for six shows
this weekend. The show will be hold at 7:30 P.M. in the Auditorium of La Maison
Francaise on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Nov. 22-24) and also at
2:00 P.M. on the 24th. Please note that the 2:00 p.m. matinee is for Sunday
ONLY. "The Laramie Project" is based on the story of a western town's
loss of innocence following a vicious hate crime perpetrated on a 21-year-old
University of Wyoming student.
November 22The Beck Institute presents a lecture, The Nature and
Treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, by Dr. Randy Frost. Dr. Frost
will be speaking about the anxiety disorder obsessive-compulsive disorder, OCD,
and what treatments have recently been proven effective in treating it.
