Assumption Announces March Events
February 14, 2003Assumption College is pleased to present the following
events during the month of March. All events will be held on the college campus
and will be free and open to the public.
March 11The Campus Activities Board will show the movie, Maid in
Manhattan at 8:00 pm in Hagan Hall free of charge. In this modern-day
spin on "Cinderella," Jennifer Lopez plays Marisa Ventura, a single
mother in New York City who works as a maid at a four-star Manhattan hotel.
When she meets Christopher Marshall (Ralph Fiennes), a Kennedy-like heir to
a political dynasty and a senatorial hopeful, he mistakes her for a guest at
the ritzy establishment. They go on a date, but when Marisa's true identity
is revealed, it seems as though the two are worlds apart.
March 12The dAlzon Art Series will have an opening lecture and reception
for the new art exhibit, Art and the Human Soul, by Fr. Donat Lamothe,
A.A., at 4:00 pm in the Emmanuel dAlzon Library. Fr. Lamothe is an archivist
for Assumption as well as a music professor and an accomplished iconographer.
This exhibit opens on March 10 and runs through April 25. It will showcase some
of his most recent work.
March 12The alcohol and drug education program will sponsor a lecture
called The Jeffrey Smarz Story at 8:00 pm in the Auditorium of La
Maison Francaise. This talk is one mans story of drinking and driving
and how it changed his life.
March 13Dr. Gilbert Meilaender is scheduled to speak at the La Maison
Francaise Salon at 7:00 pm. Dr. Meilandaer is a member of President Bushs
council on Bioethics. He is also a professor of Christian ethics at Valparaiso
University in Indiana, and the author of several books, including Body,
Soul, and Bioethics. Dr. Meilaender will explore the moral and spiritual
challenges of Bioethics in a lecture titled Retaining the Bios in Bioethics.
March 13The Foreign Film Series continues with "Queen of the Gypsies:
A Portrait of Carmen Amaya" at 7:00 pm in the DiPasquale Media Center,
Room 112. This film is a portrait of the famous flamenco dancer, Carmen Amaya,
a woman who went beyond fiery in her dance innovations. Her steps and energy
are legendary. The film weaves together recollections by those who knew Amaya
with photos and clips from her feature film appearances.
March 14The dAlzon arts series presents a poetry reading featuring
Laurie Robertson Lorant and some student works at 7:00 pm in the dAlzon
library. Assumption students whose poetry has been published in The Phoenix,
an on-campus publication, will read their works. An open mic precedes the featured
readings, so bring your poems!
March 18Dr. Aaron Lazarre M.D. will give a lecture called Apologies:
Why they Succeed and Why they Fail at 7:00 pm in the Hagan Campus Center
Hall. Dr. Lazarre is the Chancellor and Dean of UMass Medical School The lecture
is the annual Joseph Klein lecture, sponsored by the Ecumenical Institute.
March 18Comedian Dan Leavy is scheduled to appear at 9:00 pm in Charlies
at the Hagan Campus Center.
March 21The Beck Institute of Cognitive Studies will sponsor a lecture
and workshop with Dr. Dennis Russo called Positive School Programs,
at 12:30pm in the Salon of La Maison Francaise. The workshop costs $45 and you
can pre-register by contact Sue Volungis at (508) 767-7382.
March 27The HUMANARTS program will host a poetry reading with Jill McCorkle
at 7:30 pm in the Salon of La Maison Francaise. McCorkle, a North Carolina native,
has written four novels; The Cheer Leader, Tending to Virginia, Ferris Beach,
and Carolina Moon and two collections of short stories; Crash Diet, and Final
Vinyl Days.
