Assumption College Partners with Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester

Both groups celebrating anniversary years

Worcester, MA—Assumption College announced today the generous gift of $10,000 in computer equipment and network infrastructure for the Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester, who are housed in the Worcester Public Library. This gift, which has paid for the purchase of four new computers, three workstations, resource manuals, and network configuration, was unveiled at a press conference this afternoon in the Saxe Room of the Worcester Public Library.

“The partnership between Assumption College and the Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester, whose mission is to build a more literate community, is certainly a great match with Assumption College. It is even more pleasant for us at the College, given that the Literacy Volunteers is headed by an Assumption graduate, Allison Budds, Class of 1994. Her passion for the work done here caught the eyes and ears of our Centennial Committee who were looking to partner with a local agency involved in literacy programming,” said Dr. Thomas R. Plough, president of Assumption College.

Allison Budds, executive director of the Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester, said, “With the computer lab, network and updated resource library, LVGW has positioned itself to be ready for the years to come. Our tutors now have the tools to become better educators. LVGW and Assumption have become true partners in our efforts to build a more literate community.”

Assumption College is celebrating its 100-year Anniversary in 2003-2004. By forming a partnership with the LVGW, who are also celebrating their 30th year of service to Central Massachusetts, Assumption continues to demonstrate its involvement in Worcester. LVGW is the only privately funded non-profit organization in the area whose sole purpose is to make available volunteer services for adults lacking necessary literacy skills.

Assumption also announced earlier this year, as part of its Centennial Celebration, a $40,000 commitment to the Fairmont Park area for the construction of a new playground and recreational space for that neighborhood. That playground project will be completed October 25-26, 2003.
