Assumption Holds Presentation on Intimate Violence
November, 2003—Assumption College held
a presentation on intimate violence, sponsored by the Reach Out Center, Campus
Ministry, and Community Service Learning, on Wednesday, November 19, 2003 in
the Hagan Campus Center Hall. Preceding the lecture, the Clothesline Project
display in the lobby of the Laska Gymnasium, with T-shirts, sweatshirts, and
infant-sized sleepwear, depicted instances of violence against women and children.
The shirts bore heartbreaking messages of anger, shame, grief, and despair caused
by devastating intimate violent offenses such as rape, sexual assault, incest,
assault and battery, murder, and hate crimes.
To raise awareness about the issue of intimate violence (commonly referred to
as domestic violence) that day, students and staff wore red T-shirts on campus
to draw attention to the issue.
The presentation featured a special guest speaker, who shared her experiences as a victim of intimate violence. Members of the audience were then invited to share their thoughts and questions.
Following the presentation, there was a candlelight vigil on the
front lawn of Hagan that involved remembrance prayers, thoughts, a moment of
silence, and the reading of significant scriptural passages.
