October,
2004—The People for Principled Patriotism, a newly-created
grassroots organization of Assumption students, faculty, staff,
and administrators, is hosting a schedule of events in the week
before the Presidential election.
On Monday,
October 25, 2004 at 4:00 p.m., there will be a forum on the war
in Iraq, moderated and hosted by Catherine WoodBrooks, vice president
for Student Life, with short presentations by student Keith Sullivan
'05 and Professors Dan Mahoney (Politics), Anthony Traylor (Philosophy),
John McClymer (History), and Vincent Cioffari (Mathematics &
Computer Science). The forum will take place in the Marriott Room.
The invited guests represent a broad range of outlooks on the war.
A question-and-answer period will follow.
On Wednesday, October 27, 2004, the group will also be sponsoring
the Thousand Crane Project, a memorial to U.S. soldiers who have
died in the Iraqi war. Students, faculty, staff, and administration
are invited to come to Charlie's from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to
fold paper cranes to commemorate each of the more than 1,100 American
soldiers who lost their lives. When completed, the memorial to the
troops will be hung in the Emmanuel d'Alzon Library. Origami paper
and instructions will be provided.
The People for Principled Patriotism will continue to sponsor events
throughout the year. For more information about these events, please
contact the Office of Public Affairs at (508) 767-7160.
