Art: The Surprise of the 1960s
October,
2004—Assumption College's Center for Continuing and
Professional Education presents a lecture and slide show with arts
professor John Murphey, entitled "Pop Art: The Surprise of
the 1960s." This event will take place on Thursday, October
21, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of La Maison Francaise.
Pop Art was only a small part of a much larger change taking place
in aesthetic thinking based on broad changes in society, science,
and technology. It was the tip of an iceberg that was to tear apart
the aging principles of Modern Art, refreshing it with new ideas
and forms. Works by Johns, Rosenquist, Wesselman, Warhol, and Lichtenstein
will be shown and discussed, revealing their aesthetic strength
and the backgrounds of the artists that shaped their ideas and expressions.
John Murphey, a past recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Award,
has taught art at the Center for Continuing and Professional Education
since 1984.
This lecture is free and open to the public. For more information,
or to RSVP, please call the Center for Continuing and Professional
