Stanley Hauerwas to Deliver Final Centennial Lecture: "Sacrificing
the Sacrifices of War"
November,
2004—Assumption College presents the final Centennial
2004 Lecture with Dr. Stanley Hauerwas, a leading theological ethicist
and Christian pacifist, on November 29,
2004 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hagan Campus Center Hall. This lecture
is free and open to the public.
Dr. Hauerwas
is the Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics in the Divinity
School of Duke University. Named "America’s Best Theologian"
by Time magazine in 2001, he delivered the prestigious
Gifford Lectureship at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland in
the same year. His book, A Community of Character: Toward a
Constructive Christian Social Ethic, was selected as one of
the 100 most important books on religion of the 20th century. He
has authored more than 30 books to date.
Through his work, Hauerwas has sought to recover the significance
of the virtues for understanding the nature of the Christian life,
as well as narrative for understanding Christian existence. His
work cuts across disciplinary lines, embracing systematic theology,
philosophical theology and ethics, political theory, as well as
the philosophy of social science and medical ethics.
At 4:00 p.m. in the Hagan Campus Center Hall, Dr. Hauerwas will
lead a discussion group regarding the topic of ethics and disabilities.
The discussion will focus on his essay: "Suffering the Retarded:
Should We Prevent Retardation?"
