Assumption College kicks off Multi-Million Dollar Energy Saving Initiative Worcester, MA - Assumption College has launched a $2.5 million energy and water-saving retrofit of 22 buildings throughout the campus. Scheduled for completion in the fall, a significant portion of the retrofit is being implemented by Westborough-based Conservation Services Group (CSG). The energy retrofit project has six components affecting most aspects of campus. First, lighting system upgrades will take place in administrative offices, athletic facilities, the library and residence halls. Secondly, water saving measures, through the installation of toilet flush valves and shower heads, are expected to save the College nearly three million gallons of water per year. CSG is also upgrading heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems on campus. In addition, the College is replacing old windows with energy efficient, insulated windows in two of the oldest resident halls, Alumni and Desautels, both of which were built in the early 1950’s. The College is replacing the roof on the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, adding much needed insulation and infrastructure for future energy efficient air conditioning units. Lastly, with the construction of the new Multi-Sports Stadium on campus, the College is continuing its energy conservation measures by installing MUSCO’S Light Structure Green, an innovative lighting system that not only uses 40 percent less energy than traditional sports lighting units, but cuts the “lighting spill” onto neighboring properties, protecting the evening skies. According to Assumption College President Thomas R. Plough, Ph.D., “This summer retrofit project is another step in the process of renewing the campus and making it more energy efficient as opportunities arise. We will continue to look at energy conservation initiatives when new construction, or renovations to existing buildings, take place.” To help fund this energy conservation project, Assumption College will receive a rebate from National Grid for approximately 20 percent of the costs associated with the work being done by CSG. Michael McAteer, who manages energy efficiency programs for National Grid, said, “We are pleased to offer incentives and technical support to local businesses, as well as municipal and academic buildings in the City, for improving energy performance. By doing so, progressive facilities like Assumption College are not only helping their bottom line by reducing their operating costs, but also the college community is contributing to a healthier environment.” CSG President Adam Parker added, “We are excited to support energy efficiency in Worcester by participating in this project with Assumption College. These initiatives are integral to achieving a more secure energy future. Colleges and universities are realizing great financial and environmental benefits from using less energy.” Assumption College is a Catholic, liberal arts and sciences college founded in 1904. The school has 2,000 undergraduates and offers programs for graduate and continuing education students.
