HUMANARTS: Choir Sophia

September, 2004—As part of the HUMANARTS series, Choir Sophia will perform at Assumption College on Monday, October 4, 2004 at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.

In 1991 Archbishop Antonij (of Krasnojarsk and Enisej) established the Children's and Youth Choir "Sophia" as the choir for the Cathedral of the Protecting Veil (Pokrovskij sobor).

More than 100 children between the ages of six and eighteen now participate in the Choir's curriculum, which includes the study of Church Slavonic, liturgical chant, sacred folk songs, and concert music. The Choir sings at weekly services and gives regular local performances.

The Children's and Youth Choir "Sophia" has performed under the directorship of Olga Roussakova at various national and international festivals, including the All-Russian Festival "Sacred Unity" (1993), the Festival-Competition of Slavic Culture in Vladivostok (prizewinner), the International Festival of Orthodox Music in Moscow (1994), and has had the honor of performing for His Holiness Aleksij II, Patriarch of Moscow and of of all Russia.

The Choir also won a silver medal at the International Choir Competition in Italy (1996) and carried out a 2000 performance tour of the Eastern US in conjunction with the Greater Boston Festival of Orthodox Music (USA).

The Children's and Youth Choir Sophia has toured abroad in the Far East, Northern Europe, and throughout Switzerland, and is preparing their next tour in the northeastern United States for October 2004, also in connection with the Greater Boston Festival of Orthodox Music.

They have also recorded a compact disc with Claves Records (CH-3600 Thun, Switzerland) CD 50-9804, available also from distributors in the US and Canada.
