ResNet System Requirements

Computers

Buying Through Assumption College:

Students can purchase computers through the College. See the attached write-up entitled “Buying Computers Through Assumption College.” These computers are network ready. If you are purchasing a new computer, it is preferable to purchase it through the College. Assumption will help coordinate warranty support only for computers purchased through the College. All purchase info is also on the web. Start at http://www.assumption.edu/store and click on the Dell or Apple link.

Bringing your own Computer:

Many students bring their own computer to campus and most often it works fine on the campus network. Some retail computers are not designed to run on a high-speed corporate-style network and cannot be used with ResNet. Be sure that your machine meets these minimum requirements

  • 10baseT Ethernet Circuit Board (10/100 preferred)
  • 512 MB of RAM
  • CD drive (CD burner or DVD drive is recommended)
  • Understanding of your computers warranty
  • All System Software (on CD’s)
IBM Compatible Computers ' Minimum System

Network

Network Hardware

Your computer must have an ethernet card installed.

All computers should be virus free.
All computers should have up to date security patches.
All computers should be in good working order.

Wireless Network

In addition to our wired network that exists in every residence hall (port for every student), we provide wireless networking for laptop computers to connect to the campus network and the Internet in alternate locations where they may bring their laptop. Wireless access is available in all the primary academic buildings, the Hagan Campus Center, and some outdoor spaces. Wireless cards are needed for laptops to connect to the expanding wireless network on campus. These cards typically cost between $50 and $10

Support and Repair of Computers

Our RCC students are trained to network functioning computers, configure wireless network connections and install ResNet software (anti-virus software web browsers and anti-spy ware applications). During the first month of school, they work exclusively on assisting students with connecting their machines to the network. Afterwards, these students can assist students with some computer problems like connecting a printer, installing software, answering some software questions and some basic troubleshooting. These students are not trained to work on operating systems and/or hardware problems.
Our ResNet support is a trained staff of students who support student residential networking. Any operating system or hardware problems will be directed to local repair centers. Students are responsible for their own machines and keeping them with functional operating systems and hardware. The College will help coordinate warranty support only for machines purchased through the school.

How to Get Connected

To get connected to ResNet, you’ll need to do a few things.

Connect your computer to the blue network jack and start up the computer. Now you can start the registration process using a web-browsing program to activate network services. Your computer may be quarantined at this point if you need system patches or McAfee Anti-virus software or upgrades. The system will walk you through the process just buy following the on screen directions.

On Move-In Day (Registration)
  • A ResNet table will be staffed where you speak to Information Technology Staff.
  • Our ResNet students (RCC’s) will be assisting in dorms helping students get connected

ResNet Office (IT B09) - After Move-in day

  • You can come the IT Hub for technical guidance and assistance..
  • Our RCC students work 3-4 nights a week in residence halls helping with student installations. The schedule of locations will be posted on the Assumption bulletin board channel.
  • You must be available during the posted times for the residence hall you live in to get assistance during the month of September. You must be with your computer at all times while an RCC is working on the machine

ResNet Office (Fuller IT B09, extension 7060)   -
After October 1st

  • You can come to the IT HUB between 8:15 am and 7:30 pm Monday through Thursday and 8:30 am and 4:30 pm Fridays to speak to HUB staff
  • If you still are having a problem getting your machine to meet the ResNet minimum specifications you can schedule an appointment to bring your computer to the IT Center to work on it. A higher level of technical support will be available to answer questions and provide technical guidance. If your computer or software needs require further assistance we will recommend a local repair center.
