New Faculty Orientation: Student Life at Assumption College

Monday, January 23rd, 4:00-5:15 pm (Founders 214)

Our first new faculty orientation of the spring semester will focus on a discussion of student life outside of the classroom, including discussions of athletics, community service, and other activities in which many of our students take part.  We will be joined by Dean Catherine WoodBrooks and two student representatives.

Faculty Learning Community: Discussion in the College Classroom

Thursday, January 26th, 6:00-8:00 pm (Marriot9781118571354_front.pdft Room)

Our spring faculty learning community features Jay Howard’s Discussion in the College Classroom: Getting Students Engaged and Participating in Person and Online.  We’ll begin our evening with a buffet dinner and informal conversations, followed some focused questions to guide discussion at our tables.  Finally, we’ll convene as a group to consider the relevance of Howard’s work for Assumption College. 

Food for Thought: Instagram and Twitter in the Classroom

MCLC Prof. Maryanne Leone will host our first Food for Thought of the spring semester, offering us an overview of how she has been using social media sites like Instagram and Twitter to help her students engage with course material outside of the classroom.

 

Faculty Writing Day

Friday, March 24th, 2:00-4:00 pm (Library Classroom)

Get some writing done with the inspiration of your colleagues, and the help of some snacks.  Faculty can drop in at any point and spend time making progress on that book, article, or conference paper.  Take a break to talk through your writing block or learn about the work of your colleagues.  No RSVP required.

Innovations in Higher Education Lecture: Jay R. Howard

Monday, March 27th, 7:00 pm (Kennedy 112)

The 2016-2017 Innovations in Higher Education lecture will feature Jay R. Howard, Dean of the Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University, and author of Discussion in the College Classroom: Getting Your Students Engaged and Participating in Person and Online.  Prof. Howard’s lecture, which will follow a separate meeting with the members of our Course Innovation Academy, will enable us to engage more deeply in the questions raised at our spring faculty learning community, focused on his book.

Effective faculty advising can play a major role in helping students navigate their college career successfully.  For our final new faculty orientation of the year, we will be joined by Deans Eloise Knowlton and Jenny Morrison, who will provide us with guidance on advising at Assumption.
