Fall 2011: Dressing Democracy: Clothing and Culture in America
Every fall, students from Assumption College participate in the interdisciplinary American Studies Seminar sponsored by the American Antiquarian Society, where a visiting professor explores a different topic each year. The topic for Fall 2011 is “Dressing Democracy: Clothing and Culture in America,” led by Dr. Hannah Carlson (Rhode Island School of Design). Seven Assumption students have been selected to participate in this prestigious seminar. In addition to examining how scholars have analyzed the importance of clothing in expressing personal identity and political ideology, each student pursues an original, independent research project using the AAS’s extensive archival collections.
