Interning at the American Cancer Society (ACS)
Name: Jenelle Nadeau
Hometown: Walpole, MA
Major: Organizational Communication
Internship Sponsor: American Cancer Society (ACS)
Primary Responsibilities: As an intern in the Communications and Marketing Department, my primary responsibilities include: updating and maintaining all media lists, creating analysis reports of news clips, writing and editing press releases and media advisories, photographing American Cancer Society events, preparing calendar releases, and working on the Relay For Life event at Assumption College.
My internship has been a valuable experience in working in a communications department. I have been able to take concepts that I have learned in communication and marketing classes and apply them to my professional writing, which has been an enlightening experience.
I recently interviewed a participant in the ACS’s event “Look Good…Feel Better” who is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment. I wrote a press release about the participant to raise awareness of this program. In Public Relations class we have discussed how important it is to develop press releases that not only capture readers’ attention, but also provides them with all the pertinent information in the first two paragraphs. I found that when writing the press release, I was able to use the participant’s story as a way to draw readers in and then provide them with all the educational details about cancer and chemotherapy.
I have also been working on updating and maintaining media lists. This involves contacting all media outlets including radio stations, news stations, newspapers, and magazines in Western Massachusetts.
