Katie Celli: United Way of Central Massachusetts

Name: Katie Celli
Hometown: Wilmington, Massachusetts
Major: Organizational Communication
Expected Year of Graduation: 2010
Internship Sponsor: United Way of Central Massachusetts

Primary Responsibilities:

As an intern for United Way, I am the Assumption College coordinator for the 2009 United Way Campaign of Central Mass. I serve as a spokesperson, both on and off campus, and communicate with over 25 administrators, faculty, and staff who are campaign captains. The challenge is to promote the United Way and to encourage contributions and participation.

With this internship, I see first hand how important communication skills are and apply these skills to a variety of marketing projects. With my major in Organizational Communication, many of my business, writing, and communication courses apply in successfully marketing the campaign throughout campus. I develop creative ideas for advertising the important message by using photos from United Way events and direct quotes from contributors of the campaign.

Interning for a non-profit organization has provided hands-on experience which utilizes my business skills in a real-life situation. I have gained an appreciation in how one individual can make a significant difference in participating. I have experienced how working as a team is an efficient approach for a non-profit organization environment.

Here is an example of my campaign message: The United Way of Central Massachusetts is the caring power of our local community which enables everyone to become self-sufficient and successful members of society. The organization has been a success for 90 years, and it can only succeed through its volunteers – please help us reach the goals for our community today and donate!
