Blog:

The American Diabetes Association is a non-profit organization whose mission is to “prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes”. As a Special Events/Communications intern, I am fulfilling this mission by planning the Kennebunks Tour de Cure, a cycling event with  proceeds directly for raising money for research to ultimately cure diabetes.

As an intern in special events at a non-profit organization I wear many hats. In a given day, I am working on a variety of tasks, including: volunteer recruitment, rider recruitment, route logistics, calling for in-kind donations, insurance waivers, food/supply donations and much more. I use my business, computer science, marketing, and communication skills every day when contacting prospective riders, donors, and businesses and compiling a database using excel spreadsheets.

The skill I have most  improved in is communicating professionally. Whether it be in person, on the phone, or through e-mail, strong communication skills are necessary in all facets of life. Making hundreds of cold calls has allowed me to be a quick-change artist on the phone, and enabled me to respond appropriately to all situations that I encounter.

This internship has provided me with valuable experience for entering the work force. I have learned how challenging it is to plan an event, especially with a very small budget, and I have acquired a profound appreciation for the employees and volunteers who have dedicated themselves to this incredible mission.
