Name: Trae Alston-Swan
Hometown, State: East Hartford, CT
Major: Organizational Communication
Internship Sponsor: United Way of Central Massachusetts (UWCM
Primary Responsibilities: As a marketing intern at UWCM, my responsibilities include:

- Writing short stories and project descriptions that will be used in both electronic and print media.
United Way of Central Massachusetts (UWCM) is the local branch of the nationally known non-profit organization, the United Way. The mission of UWCM is to connect people and resources to improve the quality of life in the community. We do this by investing in educational opportunities, supporting families, and building healthy communities. As an organizational communication major, I use my written and oral communication skills to help fulfill this mission.
UWCM is a small branch, which forces employees to become quick-change artists and perform varied tasks. My primary tasks are marketing assignments: writing press releases, writing stories, updating social media sites with events and program dates, and more. Interning at UWCM also allows me to wear a different hat and go out into the community. My supervisor, along with other employees, frequently go on site-visits to speak with non-profit organizations about what their programs offer to the Worcester and/or Central Massachusetts community. Recently, went on two site visits and communicated with external constituents who want/need United Way funding.
Interning at UWCM has increased my interest in working at a not-for-profit organization. I believe that everyone should have access to resources that enable them to lead a good life. I am helping to improve the community by using my oral and written communication skills I learned in classes such as Strategic Managerial Communication, Communication Theory, and Argument and Persuasion.
