- Maintain databases of community tennis departments
- Support community relations managers with facilitating junior team tennis leagues
- Research potential programming leads for USTA School Tennis, Parks and Recreation, Jr. Team Tennis, Community Tennis Associations, National Junior Tennis and Learning and Tennis on Campus
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is the national governing body for the sport of tennis and the recognized leader in promoting and developing the sport’s growth on every level in the United States. It spans from local communities to the crown jewel of the professional game, the US Open. The USTA’s mission is simple: “to promote and develop the growth of tennis”. There are 17 geographical sections of the USTA, all of which are subsidiaries of the USTA.
I am the community relations intern for USTA New England. As a management major, I have taken many courses focusing on business structures, cultures, and processes. A significant concept highlighted in each course is the importance of communication and program development. I am responsible for maintaining weekly contact about program development with head tennis professionals and managers in 14 of Northern Connecticut’s (NCT) region premier tennis clubs and facilities.
This task goes hand-in-hand with the NCT’s Junior Team Tennis program (JTT). JTT is the flagship of the USTA. The NCT region’s JTT program has over 300 participants and 40 JTT teams. I am also responsible for organizing and coordinating match play to fit all time constraints; this is a difficult task.
The empowerment I received as an intern, along with my diligent but casual personality, are synonymous with the culture of USTA New England. As a tennis professional with teaching and competitive playing experience, I am now building my career potential in the business side of the tennis industry.

Sodexo is a worldwide leader in Quality of Life Services and is the dining services provider at Assumption. Its commitment is to developing quality of life services, reinforcing the well-being of individuals and helping companies and organizations improve their internal operating performance.
My internship has taught me how to incorporate corporate social responsibility into an international dining services organization. For example, The Better Tomorrow Plan provides a well balanced meal for student wellness that is linked with organic wholesalers who distribute locally grown food. With my hands-on experience at Sodexo, I have gained strong communication and organizational skills that can be applied to many careers. Planning, managing and implementing monthly events are my primary internship responsibilities.
Last month the dining team hosted a Farm to School week-long event that invited farmers from MA area to display their fruits, vegetables and goods. This gave farmers the opportunity to promote their brands, generate sales and create student awareness of healthy eating practices. Sodexo’s mission statement was well represented in this event and supported both our local and Assumption communities.
I believe my internship has demonstrated the value of socially responsible business practices.
