James B. Leary ’89

A politics major as an undergraduate at Assumption, James Leary joined the administration at University of Massachusetts Medical School in 2009 and serves as its vice chancellor for community and government relations. Prior to this appointment, he was chief of staff for Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray, and a former Massachusetts State Representative. Leary earned a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center in 1995. After a year of clerking for the Massachusetts Superior Court, he served as an assistant district attorney for two years and then entered private practice as an associate attorney with Lian, Zarrow, Eynon & Shea of Worcester. While in private practice, Jim handled all aspects of litigation, both criminal and civil, as well as appellate matters. He was elected as a State Representative in 2000.
