1. The Python, in Greek mythology, was a serpent or dragon who was worshipped at Delphi until killed by the god Apollo who then appropriated the temple there. The temple was the seat of an oracle whose answers to questions, if correctly deciphered, contained prophesies of the future. A pythoness was a priestess of Apollo at Delphi. A sibyl was a female prophetess.
